I love The Mountain Goats. Over the years I’ve collected a ton of recording and I’ve got a lot of favorites that don’t get a lot of play. I wanted to highlight a few of them here. Songs with a (***) are personal favs among my favs
“Ox Baker Triumph” - Babylon Springs Ep - this whole ep is great.
“Sendero Luminoso Verdadero” - Beautiful Rat Sunset - get past the weird intro, the song is worth it.
***“Elijah” - The Coroners Gambit - every song off of this album is good and it is certainly my favorite disc from John’s lo-fi days.
***“There Will Be No Divorce” - The Coroners Gambit - my favorite song of The Mountain Goats, bar none. It was the first Goats song I heard, driving across the country, when I was 17.
***“When I Get Home” - cover of a great song by Baby Dee which is also very good/weird

“Commandante” - Devil In The Shortwave - David, did you just list 4 of the 5 songs on Devil In The Shortwave. Yes I did. “Dirty Old Town” doesn’t do it for me.

***“In Corolla” - Get Lonely - okay, not the deepest of cuts but this song doesn’t get the love it should. When you’re sad, and I mean leaning into the sad, really just seeing how sad you can get, In Corolla is there for you.

“Going To Georgia” - Live, Columbus, 12-2-99 - I couldn’t find this version anywhere so I uploaded mine

I left off albums like Sunset Tree, Tallahassee, and All Hail West Texas because I think they are pretty accessible. I didn’t include things like Protein Source of The Future…Now! or Bitter Melon Farm or a bunch of others because they are pretty unaccessible.

I got super raw on a podcast recently talking about my fucked up family. When I was a kid I was abused. I don’t talk about it often, but I did here. I probably know a lot of other victims of abuse but it’s not the sort of thing that comes up right away.
